Seismic Response of a Bridge

A bridge is an integral structure that binds two entities. Bridges over rivers are an engineering amaze. The Howrah bridge, the Golden Gate bridge, the Sydney bridge, etc are aesthetic as well as engineered mega-structures. But before the construction of a bridge, the design phase operates in full function. While designing, besides the technical factors, risk factors are calculated as well. Risks such as earthquake, natural disasters, etc. affect the design of a bridge. In India, major part of the land is prone is seismic activities and hence, analysis of bridge trusses and foundation is necessary. This model enables a bridge model to simulate in seismic activity, concluding the response of the super-structure. The model bridge is mounted on a stiff base, which is connected to a rotating disk. When the disk rotates, it pulls and pushes the base horizontally. Thus it creates horizontal vibrations. This virtual model can help rectify any skipped risk factor in the design phase. Thus, it can save time and cost of construction. Also, it can assure more safety.
